Avis Return Milano Centrale

Happy (almost) Spring!

We will be returning an Avis rental to the Milano Centrale Railway location and hopping on board a 13:05 train to Brig. I'm trying to figure out what time we need to be there without cutting ourselves short. The goal would be to drop the car, grab some food for the rail, use the restrooms and board. We'll be driving from Maranello, so we'll need to fill the tank for sure. Does anyone have any familiarity with the car returns at the station? Also...Sunday, July 2, so may be traffic??

Grazie!

Why not return the car in Modena instead?

They aren't open on Sundays and it was quite a bit more expensive. Same with the other local locations.

Price is one thing, travel time another. And personally I'd gladly pay extra if it means I won't have to drive in Milan.

My experience is from many years ago, but a couple of points may still be relevant. There was a filling station practically at Milano Centrale, but it was closed. No particular reason. We had to drive around looking for another to fill up. Good luck on a Sunday. My advice is to fill up at a station on the autostrada.
Plot out, in detail, the way to the car return. We knew where it was, but couldn’t find the entrance.

Allow plenty of time to deal with unexpected glitches.

Yes! Thank you for that. I didn't even think about the fact that other stations might be closed.

Stations may be unmanned on Sundays and during the night, but half of them have a couple of self-serve fuel pumps where you can pay by credit / debit card or via app. Even on working days, I can't remember the last time I saw somebody paid to stand by the pumps and refuel cars, there is usually only one guy paid to sleep inside a booth and take cash.

At self serve pumps a card is the only way to fill the tank to the limit. If you filled it up on the ring road and dropped the car in downtown Milan, it's obvious the tank wouldn't be full.

You know there is a congestion charge area in Milan called Area C in Milan, don't you? I have no idea if the cameras are on during the week-end and if it's close to Milano Centrale, but you must pay the fee within a few days to avoid being fines.

ps Do not put gasoline in a diesel-powered car.

Thank you, Dario. I just finished looking at Area C and it looks like we will be able to stay out of that, fortunately.

ps

I will be vigilant about the fuel!!
