Are there good color in the trees in Tuscany and Umbria? Late September or October best time to visit?
I am in Tuscano now. As of this date there is very little color, a few yellow trees, it is mostly still green. The grape harvest is over. Olives are next. Truffles in Umbria for November
At my hotel in Rome this year, the manager told me that leaves are falling off the trees later in the year than normal...like in November. With that in mind, if there is any kind of color change it would probably be seen now.
I spend lots of time in Italy's countryside from September thru January, and I just see lots of shades of green, reminds me of Sacramento in the Winter, even in the drought. Maybe some browns in the fields depending on the harvests. But mostly green.
If you want to see these colors in Tuscany, you need to go toward the end of October, or very early November.
Having just driven from Venezia to my home base in Orvieto - there are brilliant yellows and golds high in the hills of Tuscany. Looks like someone sprinkled gold and yellow jewelry. Not much turning anywhere else. Summer was so hot and Fall has been very mild. I would be surprised if there are strong colors this year. Stayed outside Cortona and there were plenty of browns but no Fall colors.
