autostrate lost ticket and the receipt to pay fine

Last week, I was driving from the Cinque Terre to Nice and we lost our tollbooth ticket. When we exited, we were given a receipt for a fine of about 80 euros and told to pay it online within 15 days. I accidentally threw it away, as I was cleaning out my purse at the end of the trip. Opps. I would like to pay the fine but I only have the license plate number from the rental car and a rough idea of where we got the ticket. I went to the website but it looks like we can't pay it without the receipt number. Does anyone have advice about how we can pay our ticket?

Wow! Usually people posting about traffic fines do nothing but complain that it’s a scam perpetrated on tourists. Your honesty and attempts to pay your fine are commendable. I doubt that there is any way you would be able to pay the fine without information on the citation you were issued. The only thing that might happen is the agency will contact your auto rental company, obtain your address (for a fee charged to your credit card) and mail a notice of the fine to you.

I think Philip has it nailed. At this point you are stuck waiting for the toll agency to run the plate, send query to rental company, get your info and send you the bill. Unfortunately this means a service fee from the rental agency and any discount you may have gotten for paying in the 15 day window is gone.

Sadly you seem to be stuck having to wait for the process to grind through the system.

Are you driving again on an Italian motorway within the next 15 days?

It was not a fine, they basically asked you to pay the highest possible toll on that route. Putting the receipt number on www.autostrade.it, people usually get the bill reduced to the amount actually due.

Now you can only enter a PuntoBlu office, explain what happened in plain English and ask for help. They'll need to know the plate number, but most importantly you must tell them where and when you entered the network.

Thank you for all the advice. We aren't driving in Italy anytime soon so I guess I will try contacting them but otherwise wait to see what happens.

A similar thing happened to us. We had lost the ticket between the tiny seats of the rental car four of us had squeezed into. We did stop at the toll booth, but we were being yelled at in electronic Italian, while cars backed up behind us let us know in a universal language they were being inconvenienced. We finally tossed in some random bills and
drove off. The toll authorities found us easily enough once we got home - I just paid the bill then and there with no subsequent problem. I agree with another respondent - it was not a fine, just the maximum toll on the road we were travelling. Embarrassing but lesson learned.
