Do the toll booths on the autostrada accept cash only?
The quick answer to your question is no, they also take credit cards. However, in Italy, and probably other places, too, the reality is more complicated. 1st, there's the issue of the chipless American cc's. I don't know if the unmanned toll booths will accept them. We never had the nerve to try because we didn't want to risk having to back out with a long line of irate drivers behind us. Maybe someone else can enlighten you. 2nd, is the consideration of whether your cc company will charge a flat fee for the transaction. Is it worthwhile to spend $5 for the convenience? 3rd, is the existence of completely unmanned exits. We encountered one such on the road to Malpensa from Lago Maggiore. If you don't have cash, and your cc doesn't work, you're in a pickle. Try to keep a supply of cash on hand at all times. BTW, when approaching the toll booths, be careful not to get in the wrong lines. The safest course is to head for the booth with the human figure and cc icons.
If you enter your route on ViaMichelin.com it will tell you how tolls will be.
We always kept a supply of small bills and coins near the driver for the toll booths. There were other options but we never used them.
Janice, we just drove the Autostrada in Sept and Oct, and toll stations do accept regular credit cards. We found it very convenient, as rather than fishing for change at each booth, we simply kept our credit card handy and used it every time. We never had a problem.
Thanks for all the great information. Now I won't panic if I get caught short on cash. I'm just not used to constantly handling cash - even our apartment and B & Bs we've reserved do not accept credit cards!
