Automobile Ins

I am renting a car in Italy and the quoted price is 'Inclusive' of insurance, i.e. the insurance required in Italy. What additional insurance should I buy, if any?

According to their website (www.usa.visa.com), Visa no longer excludes coverage in Italy.

Their only excluded countries are Ireland, Northern Ireland, Jamaica and Israel.

You should purchase all the insurance and insurance upgrades that the car rental agency offers. This is Italy. Don't count on any credit card "insurance" coverage to be enough. You want to be able to walk away and hand them the keys should you get into an accident. Wrangling with a credit card company to get you out of a bind is not what you want to deal with. Use that as a secondary coverage only. It will cost you a little more to purchase the insurance, but you will gain so much peace of mind doing so.

No matter what...get the Super CDW!! Thank goodness we did. We had an accident in Naples within 3 hours of landing in the country!! We were worried for the next three weeks as to what would be the outcome when we returned the car to FCO. Well, we were completely covered, no questions asked, just gave them the keys. According to the guy at Hertz...we could have totalled the car and been covered!! BTW, their are no "driving laws" in Naples!!!! No one was hurt, but we turned left, and a damn Vespa ran right into us!
Besides all that, driving throughout Italy is an unsurpassed experience! If you get lost, just stop and have a gelato!

We just got back from Italy, and Auto Europe placed us in a Europcar rental.

Since CDW (collision insurance)is mandatory in Italy, it came with our Europcar policy. It would have been a total waste of money to buy the Super CDW, since our deductables were only $350 EU for theft, and $200 for a collision.

Liability (bodily injury and property damage to others) was covered in the rental car policy.

But "personal liability" (personal auto accident insurance for the Boss and I) was not covered, by either our home auto policy, our travel insurance policy, or the rental auto insurance policy.) We got that ($500K)thru our VISA (if we used the VISA to pay for the rental car!)

Some travel insurance policies cover some of these things, but because we live in Oregon we had to find other avenues of coverage.

The moral of the story; read the coverage provided by the rental auto policy, and make sre that you can fill in the blanks.

We also always buy a trip insurance policy thru one of the firms represented by Squaremouth.com.
