We use Auto Europe and they offer great prices and lots of flexibility if you need to add or subtract dates once you get there but we never get automatics. They're in Maine and available 24/7 for reservation questions.
Auto Europe is the best I've ever found: lowest prices and convenient because they have many offices thru Europe. They rent automatic cars, but it's more expensive. Renting a car for 7 days will save you some money vs. renting just a few days.
We have gone with Skycars several times and we are renting automatic in Germany for 10 days in April for 403 euros incl aiport taxes picking up Nuerberg and returing Frankfurt.
Why not just learn to drive a stickshift? Spend the money to actually gain a skill instead of paying extra for a rental. It's not that difficult.
Do a google search for 'discount auto rentals italy'.
Before you rent, use the toll-free phone number and talk with an agent.
After reading travelers experiences in requesting cars with automatic trans.
I remember that even though the agency will tell you they will have one, it does not always mean you will get one. Most agencies stock more stick shift models; so be flexible. They are in short supply.
I always ask for automatic and have always received one. Sometimes I have to upgrade to get it, but I consider it worth the cost.
Auto europe. If you want an automatic, do it, you dont need to learn a stick shift to go drive through mountains in italy!
Just my opinion but if you have only ever driven a automatic, and even if you think you might want to drive a manual or learn to do so, for the sake of your safety and sanity, don´t do it in that part of Europe, esp the Amalfi coast. I have driven manual cars all my life and much prefer them but this is challenging driving, not a cruise along a motorway.
We have always used auto europe and found them excellent. Strangely enough we have booked manual cars and ended up with automatics on several occasions, including Italy.
I rented a car from Thrifty. I used travelocity to check out prices. No problem...but I don't know about automatic availability. Rented in Florence and returned in Rome. We hired a driver to take us down the Amalfi Coast because of the horror stories we had heard of driving on the coast. This was in late October......traffic was no problem. Driving along the coast would have been no big deal....going down to the towns on the coast is though because of parking.
OK, a bit off topic, but in my humble opinion, the Amalfi coast is not a great place for the casual driver and parking can be horrendous. If cost is a concern, maybe consider a local rental (pick up and drop off at the same location) in Tuscany, then train to Amalfi and use local transportation, which is scary enough. As for companies, any of the major chains found in the US (Hertz, Avis, etc) will more likely have Automatics available than the Europe based agencies, since Americans tend to be the biggest demand.
HI-
We used www.kemwel.com, and ended up with a Hertz car for about $300, with "full, zero deductible" insurance coverage. Hertz wanted over $500 for the same car, and another $7 per day for zero deductible!
If we ever rent again, it will be through Kemwel.
As for the Amalfi coast, we were there in November (the "off" season) and the traffic was still sketchy. Please, give yourselves a break and do not drive the Amalfi coast- local buses are efficient and a lot less hassle.
Try arguscarhire.com as well as AutoEurope. I've dealt with both in the past.
