Authentic Italy from Rome - no tourists - in 3 days?

My family is part of a tour group visiting Rome in August but we have 3 "free" days to do what we want. We are already scheduled to see all the "must sees" (Colosseum, Roman Forum, Capitoline Hill, Circus Maximus, etc.) in and around Rome with the tour group. We want to spend the rest of our time visiting/seeing what is off the beaten path, not where all the tourists go. Where do we go (Rome or other) to experience the local people, food, and crafts? (Even in the states, we tend to avoid anything touristy like the plague and strike out on our own to find the unexpected and unforgettable beauties where no one else goes).

If we choose to spend a couple of days in Florence, where are these "off the beaten path" places?

Any suggestions would be wonderfully helpful!!

Jennafir, check out the Trastevere area of Rome--across the river. Google trastevere,lifeinitaly.com and you will be given a description of that neighborhood. Folks who live there consider themselves descendents of the original Romans.

I have to disagree...I think Trastevere, which you will find as a tourist destination in just about EVERY guidebook to Rome, is about as touristy as you can get.
That said, it will be difficult to find a neighborhood, restaurant, etc in Rome where you won't see any tourists (except maybe a few dodgy peripheral areas, where you do NOT want to go). Still, avoiding tourist traps won't be hard if you visit some highly recommended places.

What would you like to spend your three days doing? A wine tour? Shopping? Outdoors? Lake? Culinary experience? Let us know so we can make some suggestions.

Jennafir,

I doubt that you'll find anywhere around Rome that is completely free of other tourists. The Trastevere area is wonderful, so that's one possibility. In the evenings there seemed to be lots of locals in the sidewalk Cafes but there were tourists as well.

Keep in mind there are lots of people like you that are trying to find their own "back doors".

Good luck and happy travels!

Head out of the center and up Via Nomentana and go to Villa Torlonia which was the residence of Mussolini. It was closed and abondoned for many years but three years ago they restored the buildings and the park around it. The Villa itself is beautiful and lots of Romans head there on the weekend to relax. After that a little bit futher there is also the Mausoleum of Santa Costanza, a beautiful early Christian round church with fantastic frescos.
Other suggestions would be, closer in, the Aventine Hill and Testaccio.

You might want to take a SITA bus to Tivoli to the Ville di Este to see the fountains. WE went there last August and we were the only Americans visiting. Also, nearby is Hadrian's villa. Rick Steves' guide would probably provide the bus info. Ostia Antica is also nearby and you can use the metro to reach this destination.

Orvieto is a 75 minute train ride from Stazione Termini and a nice day trip. Take the funicular up the mountain to reach the town and then just browse around.

I've traveled many times in Italy and finding a place free of tourists is not so easy.
