We will be visiting Italy in the Fall. We have made several previous visits. This time we would like to take the train through Austria into Italy. Which is the best city from US to fly into Munich or Frankfort? Then what is the best way to procede by train in order to see highlights of Austria. The end point for this leg of the trip will probably be Bologna, Italy. What is a reasonable amount of days for this trip? The next part of the trip will be to Sardenia. Would rather fly than do the ferry. What is the best way to proceed from Bologna?
What is your home Airport?
Many large US hubs have non stop flights to Frankfurt and also Munich, largely operated by Lufthansa or United (both partners in the Star alliance).
From either city to Italy you’d go through Innsbruck, therefore not a large portion of Austria. If you want to see Salzburg, for example, which is relatively close to Munich, it would be a detour from the most direct way to Bologna. Vienna is even farther east. 3 nights for Salzburg are appropriate, Vienna also needs at least 3 or 4. But I don’t know what you’d like to visit.
From Bologna to Sardinia you can fly direct from the Bologna Airport with Alitalia, Meridiana, or RyanAir. Sardinia is a summer destination, therefore in the fall there might be more limited flight options.
How much time do you have, i.e., number of nights you will sleep in Europe?
