August in Italy

Hello, we are thinking about planning a wedding and honeymoon in Italy in August along the Amalfi coast area. However, I understand that many Italians take their vacations in August, so we are concerned that many tourist sites/businesses would be closed. My question is: what is the extent of the closures during the month of August in Italy?

You will have the opposite problem on the Amalfi Coast in August. Everything will be open, but it will be roaring busy, hot and crowded. Not my idea of a relaxing holiday, but no worries about anything being closed.

To have a legal wedding in Italy requires much paperwork and red tape. I'm assuming you will have the legal wedding in the US?
The Amalfi Coast in August will be extremely hot and humid, not to mention packed with people. The area is a victim of its Instagram success. Those perfect posted pictures don't accurately portray the realities on the ground. In addition, the infrastructure has been sadly neglected over the years, and there is no fast nor efficient mode of transportation south of Naples.
The area is beautiful and you can have a better trip if you are prepared and plan for the realities of the area.
Congrats on the wedding!

Nothing will be closed at seaside locations, including, and especially, on the Amalfi Coast. Of that you can be certain.

If you're planning this for August 2024, I think you're going to find lodgings rather picked-over at this point in the popular places on the Amalfi Peninsula . Perhaps if you will have few guests accompanying you, it will work out.

Just to join the choir here, not only will the coast be packed, accommodation prices will be at peak. If you are planning on guests, I personally wouldn't subject them to the prices and complexities of a destination wedding on the Amalfi Coast in August. Just IMHO.

Also pay heed to the advice concerning complications for a legal wedding above? As with destination weddings to other parts of the world, it can be much easier to do the legal piece in the US and have just a symbolic ceremony abroad. Whatever you decide, congrats on the upcoming nuptials!

Thank everyone for your advice. It is much appreciated.

We are also considering the Lake Como for a summer wedding in August. What type of weather, crowds, closures could be expected at that time?

Same answer applies to Lake Como. Nothing will be closed in August. It's a major vacation destination and August will be the busiest month, therefore it will be the month that merchants and hotels are least likely to close.

The amount of crowds varies according to the town you choose. Some popular towns (Bellagio, Varenna, Mennagio) will be more crowded than others.

CM, the most important variable is finding the accommodations that you need for your wedding. Many couples book Lake Como wedding sites a year in advance. If you can find what you need, in your price range, then do it.
We enjoy Lake Como much more than Amalfi, it's absolutely beautiful, not as crowded, and it's easier to move about. Lake Como is a place that we return to on a regular basis. Congrats!

I had trouble finding one room with twin beds in one of the easily-accessible Lake Como towns two months ago when I was trying to set things up for a visit beginning August 30. If you have really deep pockets (and your guests do as well), I imagine there will something available at the high end of the price spectrum, but you should look immediately.
