I have two kids that are very excited to see Italy and eat Italian food in Italy. My husband likes to go running and see nice scenery. I have mapped out two trips. One to Cefalu with a couple days in cefalu, a boat day trip to the Aeolian Islands, mt etna, sailing, a small waterpark, lunch at a farm... we could end up adding a second base but it seems easy to fill up the days in Cefalu. The second to Puglia. A few days in Otranto where we can see the town and the nearby beaches by car and boat then tour an olive oil farm and ostuni on the way to a hotel on the beach (see Cisterno or a waterpark if kids are up for it from the hotel) and then see the trullis and spend a night in monopoli swimming and taking a boat before taking a train to Rome from Bari.
...when I look at Puglia I like the color of the sea and all the little towns by the sea and the idea of taking the train back to Rome. When I look at Cefalu I love the views from the beach and the hillier/more spectacular landscape.
Honestly either one of those sound fabulous. I have not been to Sicily but it is high on my list. I have been to Puglia twice and thought it would be great for kids--the trulli, the farms, the caves, the castle, on and on. I think I would decide based on how the flights work out and how much time you have.
If you do get to Puglia, in the Itria Valley there are great running paths among the villages, including a path along an aqueduct.
Either sounds great...your husband deserves a medal for even thinking about running in southern Italy in August. :)
Enjoy!
Don't know how much time you have for thus part of your trip. I usually discourage Sicily for less than 10 days. I think for a shorter time, Puglia makes more since. Be sure you're prepared for the heat and time needed to reach either location. You definitely won't lack for things to do.
Thanks! I think I am underestimating the heat but I am making sure we have A/C and a place to swim wherever we stay. I will look at the runs, thanks!
