Audio Guides & advance reservations

Hi! Our April trip is getting closer and closer! Can someone tell me about adio guides and if they were found to be a good alternative to a tour guide? I was not able to get close enough to hear during my last tour experience. Also, if we obtain on-line tickets for a specific day and time to Vatican, and Coloseum is there any flexibility as to time? (ie if our reservation is for 10 am and we get there at 11?) We will come via train from the outskirts of Rome. Thank you!

I have found audio guides to be adequate, the RS in particular, but also the ones available at the sight - most come with optional details if you want more information. Be sure to take a photo ID with you as a deposit if you rent an audio guide from a museum or archeological site.

As for keeping your appointment time, I don't have any direct experience, but I think it could depend on the security guard(s) on duty, whether there is a long line at 11am (for example) - technically I think you can be turned away and told to get in the no-appointment line.

I used Rick Steve's audio guides on my visit to Italy last summer. I used it for the Pantheon, Roman Forum, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. I found the information very helpful and enjoyed how I could walk around at my own pace while listening.

I reserved a Colosseum tour at 11:00 am and found that we still had to wait in a 1 hour line to get in while others who didn't have reserved tickets got in right away! I would recommend getting to our tours on time or even before, but since you are traveling in April, it may not be as busy and they may have more flexibility.
