Attire for basilicas in Italy

Traveling to Venice and Rome and have dresses that hit at the knee but not below. Ok for entering the basilicas?!

Something to cover the shoulders, and a "knee length" skirt or dress. Some churches (St.Mark's in Venice) provide light papery wraps for mis-dressed tourists but don't count on it. Respectful is the concept; not sporty, not too casual.

Nick B is right. My daughter wore a lovely, modest (in a dad's opinion) dress to St. Mark's but she's 6'4", so her knees were exposed. She had to buy a wrap to meet their expectations. Ironically, the wrap was shorter on her than the dress.

When in doubt, crouch a bit! ;}

That should be OK, but remember you also need to cover your shoulders. When in Italy I keep a large, lightweight scarf in my purse--easy to carry, and always prepared!

We just returned from there. SO many tourists standing in lines were not in compliance. We were nervous that we wouldn't get in so wore joggers then changed as soon as we finished. I think shoulders are more important, esp if your dress gets close to knees. I only saw one person pulled out at St. Mark's, teen girl wearing very short jean cutoffs, and she had to get the scrub like pants they provide.

We were at St. Mark’s last week and there were tourists wearing all kinds of “inappropriate” clothing. The guard was being very watchful and not letting them in but directing them to a booth where they could buy paper coverups for 2 Euros each. I have not seen that option here in Florence. We made sure all of our clothing was below the knee. My husband and son wear pants with zip off legs. Not the most fashion conscious but it works. You never know what the guard will decide on knee length. Better safe than show up and be turned away.

Thanks all. Knew about the shoulders- I always have a scarf at the ready- but all my dresses are at the knee. Guess I’ll play it safe and wear something longer in Venice. How was St Peters in Rome? Same? How about the Vatican Museum? Thanks!

Just take a light shawl or big scarve.
That will be of help if you have any comment from the church staff.
The rule is to dress such as one should in a church, that is with respect and classy. Women are expected to have at least short sleeve dress, if not put a shawl on your shoulders. You may also wear a paie of trousers with a light short sleeve shirt or Tee shirt. Skirts and dress should go to the knee
