ATMs in Stresa

We'll be coming from Switzerland to Stresa via train en route to Isola di Pescatori. We've been advised by our hotel that the island doesn't accept credit cards so we'll need to get euros after arriving Stresa. Could someone please advise us as to ATMs at or near the train station, or perhaps other ATMs nearby that are reliable/safe? Thanks. Betty

Thanks, Steven. How long a walk from the station to the ferry? Uphill/downhill/cobblestones??? We'll have roll-ons plus backpacks.

It's essentially downhill to level to the center , and an easy ten to fifteen minutes with roller bags . The place is stunning , since our visit a few years ago , we have been pining to return - Autumn 2018 is our plan , look at this video - https://youtu.be/zCztktfWAIw

During our trip in 2015, our fellow travelers found an ATM in town. This is one of those times that I would consider bringing a few euros with me from home to take care of those expenses on the island. In the big scheme of things, a bit of extra exchange rate won't make that much difference. We don't like surprises. So it costs you an extra $5-10 in exchange.

Steven, I'm guessing that fall is a better time to go there than late June when it's humid with mosquitoes. But our plans are set to hike in the Berner Overland at that time for the wildflowers. Have you ever been to Stresa in late June? I absolutely loathe mosquitoes, so am considering saving it for another trip as the hotel on Pescatori lacks AC and we'll therefore have to sleep with the windows open. But it IS beautiful--thanks for your video!

We were in Stresa in mid-June. Cool, no bugs, downpour one day, did the ferry to Switzerland both ways (train was on strike), had a great time, but it wasn't necessarily warm (rained).

Not quite what you were asking for, but hope it might be helpful.

Mother Duck, Glad to hear this. I had read that mosquitoes were bad in late June so your experience gives me hope. Rain I can tolerate--we live in Seattle!

Well, if you live in Seattle, you can appreciate a "typical" June. A bit dreary, with some rain.

We loved the islands on Lago Maggiore and, although we didn't stay in Stresa, we stayed in Arona, and found it friendly and low-key.

Probably one of the highlights of our trip. Lago Maggiore is not highly recommend in RS's books and therefore, we found it delightful. There were 8 of us from all over the US and we had a great time. Spent 3 nights in Arona and ate most of our meals in Stresa.

It was great fun and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

As I recall, there are several banks in the vicinity of Piazza Cadorna so you'll have to walk by them on the way from the station. If you walk down Via Principe Tommaso, you should pass an Intesa SanPaolo Bank and then a Banca Populare di Novara, which are on the way to the Ferry dock.

Mother Duck, Thanks for sharing more of your Lago Maggiore experience. Two more questions if you don't mind: Can you recommend a good restaurant in Stresa? Did you ferry to Locarno?

Your hotel will probably have some type of plug-in mosquito repellant. They work for me.

There were 8 of us, and we basically had pizza and salad. We were meeting up later for a very intense food and wine tour, so simple food was fine.

We had planned on the "Scenic Boat and Rail Trip to Lorcarno and Centovalii" It didn't happen due to a rail strike. We road the ferry up and back.

I can't imagine you couldn't just take the ferry from Locarno. That's what we ended up doing.

The islands are magical - couldn't have planned anything better. We all a great time, no crowds, great weather, good food. It was wonderful.

Sorry for the delay , I can't speak to June , as we visited in early October . The weather was delightful , mildly warm days and cool evenings .
