Have any tips on access fees for different ATMs in Italy, we have a Bank of America account and they do not have a partner in Italy.
The key to Capital One is to open a money market account and use the debit card that comes with it. You can set it up with no transaction fees and no international conversion charges. And you'll make interest on your money.
You are correct that BofA has no partner in Italy. Fees vary between card issuers. WAMU used to be one of the best but they are now Chase. I don't know if their low fee has changed. Capital One and Schwab ATM cards also have low fees (or used to). For BofA, look for about 3%-4%.
Mark,
No Italian bank will charge you to use an ATM. All the charges come from your own bank.
A few years ago Bank of America used to be partners with Deutche Bank. I looked it up online and there are Deutche Bank branches thoughout Italy. Does anyone know anything more about this? I believe when I traveled two years ago, I did not get ATM fees if I used Deutche Bank.
Rebecca, BofA does have reciprocal banking relationships with a number of banks. Two are Barclays in the UK and Deutschebank in Germany. CLICK HERE to see the full list.
What is important to know about this alliance is that the reciprical relationships are only valid in the home country of the bank. For example, it works for Deutschebank in Germany but not a Deutschebank ATM in Italy. You can read this on the BofA website. That being said, I have seen a post where a poster was able to use a Deutschebank ATM outside of Germany and wasn't charged any fees. Still, I wouldn't bet on it. We'll be in England shortly and, as a BofA card holder, I will be seeking out the Barclays ATMs.
