Please help, I will be traveling to Italy next week and just read in RS's guide book that ATMs will not access savings accounts. I recently opened a new savings acct (at a new bank with better ATM fees) for this trip, as I was uncomfortable accessing my main bank accts. while away. It is the only acct linked to this ATM card, so I won't have to choose which acct to access. Will this work, or will I need to open a checking acct. too?
I think you will be fine with your ATM card linked only to your savings account. I think the guidebook is talking about checking accounts with a savings account linked to it. I consider that protection. My ATM card was stolen from me in Rome and they drained my checking account but my savings account was not accessible.
The ATM card I normally use on trips to Europe is linked to my savings account at a credit union, the only account I have there. Never had a problem.
