ATM's, once again.

We are now leaving in a few days and I tried my new Capital One debit card from my moneymarket account. It only withdraws from the savings side. I understand the ATM's in Italy do not do allow withdrawals from savings only from checking. Is this accurate? I got the Capital One acct. after reading all the info on this site. Yikes!Any suggestions?

Char,

As Steve suggested, it would probably be a good idea to check with the card issuer. Also, take a "backup" card, preferably one which accesses a chequing account!!!

I did talk with Capital One and they said the funds come out of savings. I do have another card that does function easily other places in the world but comes with a fee. The plan was to have it as a back up, not the primary card. Rats! Guess I'll find out later this week...

I'd call up Capital One and ask them point blank, will my card work in European ATMs? I've asked several banks that over the past few years as I've been learning all of that stuff, and they've always told me "yes it will work" - if that doesn't please you call back and talk to someone else. Don't just give up or assume it won't work, keep asking the right questions from the bank and you'll get an answer at some point.

Don't panic. The Cap1 card will work fine. It did for us last May. What Italian ATMS will NOT let you do is choose between two accounts - checking and savings. Your Cap1 moneymarket card is tied to only one account and will work fine.

My atm card is from my bank. It is not a debit card, only an atm card. The money comes from the checking account. I noticed that when using the atm's in Italy they do not offer the option of taking money from either checking or savings. Contact the card issuer and inquire as to where the money will be taken.

When we are in Italy we only use the atm machine during banking hours which are unusual. If the machine eats your card you can go inside for help. Also, I make sure I have enough money for the weekends so I do not need to use the machine. Pay attention to the slot where you insert the card. If you see any wires protruding or anything protruding do not use the machine. The thieves are very accomplished and you may not be able to remove your card. After you leave they come along with a long tweezer and steal your card. Just a word of caution...

Buon viaggio,
