ATM's at FCO

Hi,

Few questions.
Are there convenient ATM's at Rome's FCO on arrival in Italy?
Also, are all ATM's similar in charges or is that solely dependent on the debit card used?
Thanks in advance.

I don't know about FCO specifically, but there are now some ATMs showing up in Europe that charge fees of their own. That should be disclosed early in the transaction, so you can just hit the Cancel button and try a different machine.

Some machines will offer to record the withdrawal in dollars rather than euros. You don't want that, because the conversion rate will be good for the bank and bad for you.

Otherwise, fees--if any--do depend on the particular debit/ATM card you are using. There can be a flat fee and/or a percentage fee in the form of a less-than-standard exchange rate.

Thanks for the information. I just wanted to make sure I had some Euro's before I left the airport and not have to depend on finding one in the city when I first get to Rome.

Buy some euro's before you leave. Then you will easily find a bank associated ATM when you get into the city.

Yes, there are bank ATM's at FCO. I used the one at Unicredit and there were no fees, no offer of dynamic exchange, great exchange rate. They have one outside their branch. It kept rejecting my card. Their other one was one flight up and worked perfectly.

If arriving at Terminal 3, there's an ATM on the left just at the end of the baggage pick-up area. It used to have no fee, but it showed a €3 fee when I used it this past February. You can accept the fee or decline the transaction. There are other ATMs after you exit into the arrivals concourse, but I'm not sure whether those charge a fee. Avoid AMTs that aren't associated with a bank.

Personally we like to have Euros in hand when we land. Yes, if you get a couple or three hundred from your local bank before you leave, it will cost you a little more. However, considering the overall cost of the trip it's not that much. And it eliminates having to find an ATM right off the bat. Just my two Euros worth.

Totally agree with TC. We've done the airport ATM thing. You arrive tired, feeling yucky, need to clear passport, watch your valuables then find the ATM that won't rip you off. Nah, won't do that again. Take 100 Euro's which will cost you about $10-15 more in the US and get the rest from an ATM in town. There are numerous threads about this and you'll get arguments on both sides. But, given the cost of your entire trip the money spent on the currency you buy in the US, money you'll need to pay for a coffee at the airport, ground transportation, etc., is a pittance.

Something to remember is that in Europe they use commas instead of periods and vice versa in currency. My bank kept turning down my attempts to withdraw 400.000 euros for insufficient funds. (the atm added the last 0 when i entered 400.00.) Finally i figured it out -- 400,00 E worked.
