Hi When I use my ATM card will the Italian bank charge a fee in addition to the US Bank fee? If so, is there a better bank machine we should look for? Most US banks are charging 3%, but Wells Fargo charges a flat $5. Also, when we fly into Milan and take the bus to the main station to go to CT Monterossro - should we make sure to ATM at the airport? Thank you Neil and Laurie
We used our Visa debit card issued by our credit union for all our ATM withdrawals. The fee was 1% for each transaction regardless of how much we withdrew (usually around 300 euros). The conversion rate matched what was being quoted on the web for that particular day. We used whatever ATM was convenient, regardless of bank.
European banks don't charge a fee for using their ATM's. Your only fees will be those imposed by your own American bank. Be sure you use bank-owned ATM's in Italy. These will be easily found at the Milan airport.
This is such a commonly asked question, I really need to set up a macro for my standard response. :-) Set up a Capital One Money Market Account and use it for ATM withdrawals. No fees of any kind. And you earn interest on the money. Really. No lie. Takes a few weeks to do.
Michael That is a great tip - too late for me now. I'm glad I stumbled upon Cap One's no transaction fee for purchases. I would think with all the question re ATMs that one would have been posted more often. Neil
