Ricks book and various other online comments say that pin numbers should be 4 digits long. BOA gave me a 6 digit number. Should I change it to 4 digits or will 6 digits work fine?
I've read that longer PINs still work and get truncated down to 4, but it might be worth the peace of mind to change it before your trip.
Urban tale. Six digits work fine. Four digit restrictions go back to the very early days of ATM usage and the same for the restriction that the pin number cannot start with a zero. Zeros are acceptable today.
Have you tried it here at home?
If it works at your bank here, it will work anywhere else too.
My Italian bank bancomat (ATM) has 5 digits (currently with a leading 0).
All my Italian bancomat PINs always had 5 digits, while my US one has 4. Both work in Italian bancomats.
I have never heard of 6 digits for a bancomat and don't know if they would work, I presume so.
For online transactions my Italian bank requires a PIN of 8 digits.
About 5 years ago my BoA card came with a 6-digit PIN and it suggested changing it to 4-digits. At that time some European ATMs didn’t accept 6-digits. To play it safe I changed it to 4-digits.
