Day number two in Rome and unable withdraw any money. I tried five different atm machines all over town and they all have the same message "temporary unavailable" but the Italian couple in front of me got cash. I called my bank in the States and there is no problem...anyone know what's going on??
Your card may be demagnetized.
Do you have a second card you can try? Ask your bank if they can see the attempts make to withdraw? If they cannot then it means that the problem is with the ATM. Use an ATM attached to a bank during open hours. If you have the same problem go into the bank and see if they can help resolve the problem. I have never had this problem so any unable to provide an suggestions that I know will absolutely work.
Try it again but ask for fewer euros. The amount you are asking for may be over your daily limit. This has happened to me many times. Also, make sure that the ATM machine is conducive to your card. Example, Interlink, Plus. Check for this on the ATM machine and the back of your card.
Denise raised an excellent point which I forgot. Test with just a hundred Euro request.
Yes - atm at Termini station worked for me!
One of the problems that I have had with ATMs is that some will only dispense a certain amount even though your limit may be higher. You may be able to just do another transaction, that way the get more in service charges. Also I have found that some ATMs just don't like your card, but if you keep trying you probably can find one that works. I ususally carry 2 cards.
