In the past, we have always been urged to use our ATM card in Italy. Our bank was taken over by US Bank with a new ATM card. The logos on the back are "MoneyPass"which does not work in Europe, Interlink and PLUS. Does anyone know if this card will work in ATMs in Sorrento or Florence?
You shouldn't have any problems. PLUS is owned by Visa, so your card will be accepted most everywhere.
Now the bad news US Bank charges 3% and a $5 withdraw fee - I am an old customer like you through a bunch of mergers. But the US Bank cards works fine all over Europe. Check out you local credit union.
Dianne, Simply Google PLUS ATM locator or VISA ATM locator, and you can find a list of available ATMs in any city worldwide. I always print the list for the immediate neighborhood in which my hotel will be located. Also always a good idea, if possible, to use an ATM inside a bank lobby (or right outside the bank) during business hours for all the obvious reasons. You should have no problems finding participating ATMs in Italy. And, I'm sure you already know to inform your bank of your travel dates/places and to check ahead of time the daily withdrawal limits associated with your card/account (which the bank can change for you, upon request; but a lower $amount can actually help to eliminate outrageous withdrawals should the card fall into the wrong hands). I will only hold a pure ATM card (that does not double as a debit card) for technical/safety reasons. Since I could go on for paragraphs about that, just check with your bank re: the differences......few people understand the important difference.
Happy travels!
Thank you all, for your replies. I have already checked on the locations of ATMs near our hotels. I was initially thrown because our bank was taken over by another bank with a new debit card issued. The bank itself was not a lot of help. I didn't want to find myself in Italy with no sources for money withdrawal. My question has been resolved. I appreciate the assistance from all of you.
Hi Dianne. I have US Bank (and unfortunately, as Frank said, the fees are awful) and I haven't had a problem with my ATM card so far (though I never used it in Italy). But I'm actually wondering how necessary the logos are on the back of the card. Last summer I was in Goettingen (a college town in central Germany) and couldn't find a bank ATM with any logos that matched the ones on my card. Finally I just picked a bank to see if the card would work anyway and it did, and the fees were the same.
The legos on the back indicate the networks available. Without a working network the card will not work. If the card is a VISA or MasterCard it will work on its respective network (Plus, Cirrus) even if that lego is not on the back of the card. Nearly every ATM in Europe will have access to both of those networks.
