We will be in Assisi on Nov 1, and since it's a Holy Day (All Saints), the guides cannot speak in the basilica with Masses going on. Is it still worth paying a guide for a half day tour, or would you suggest doing the self guided tour? Not sure how much of an Assisi tour is focused on the Basilica and also the Basilica of St. Clare, which I am also interested in visiting. Thanks!
As I recall, the tour of the basilica I took with a RS tour focused on the crypt. I would think the mass would be in the upper area (nave) of the basilica.
Thanks! I got a message from a potential tour guide saying guides weren't allowed in the basilica on holy days, so I will have to clarify what that means and whether it's just the nave.
I am in Assisi every year. During Mass, and this is pretty much for every church in Italy, tours and tourists are stopped at the door (unless you are there for Mass, of course). After the last Mass of the day (noon-ish) you are free to visit all 3 levels. The RS book is good but there are plenty of descriptive materials available at the basilica's bookstore. After 14 years (I help run a music festival in Assisi), my time in this basilica is always precious to me. Santa Chiara (St. Clare) is also a powerful place to visit. If you can get up early (6:45) you can hear (not see because they are cloistered) the nuns chant morning prayer in the Chapel of the Crucifix (just to the right as you enter Santa Chiara). The museum below is small but extremely interesting.
Thank you, Robert! Does that timing hold true on the holy days, too? I will likely attend Mass that day at the Basilica, but might also consider the church of St. Clare if possible.
