Assisi to Sorrento via Rome

We'll be taking the train to Rome, then the bus on to Sorrento. We were thinking of arriving early in Rome, spending a couple of hours near Termini, lunch, then catching our bus. Does that sound feasible? We're trying to avoid a full day of travel without breaks. Thanks.

I think the bus leaves from Tiburtina Station, FYI. SO you'd have to transfer. We are traveling from Spello (near Assisi) to Sorrento later this year. I was planning on trains: Spello to Rome; Rome to Naples, Circumvesuviana to Sorrento.

The trains from Assisi to Rome stop at Tiburtina, one stop before Termini. If transferring directly to the bus, you would get off there. Depending on departure time of bus, you could also continue on to Termini, check your bags and explore, and then take the Metro back to Tiburtina. That's certainly feasible provided there's sufficient time between your train's arrival and bus' departure.

Thanks for the info. We can take an early train to Rome and have a few hours before catching either the Marozzi or Curreri bus (not sure yet which one). That should give us some time to explore a little bit. We'll be returning to Rome after visiting the Sorrento area so we'll have plenty of time to see much more of Rome. Thanks again.

Jan: You asked With regards to the above travel from Assisi to Sorrento, if we take train from Assisi to Rome, then Rome to Naples, then Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, what is the approx cost and time. You can easily cost this out at www.trentitalia.com. There is a AV (high speed) train from Rome to Naples, and if you plan in advance and know exactly the day you will travel, you can buy a mini-fare for that portion of the route. The rest of the segments need to be purchased on Italy as they are regionale trains. I believe our whole trip from Spello (near Assisi) to Sorrento is about 7 hours with a bit of a layover in Rome. But we are in Italy for a month and don't mind a train day now-and-then. It's actually relaxing.

Christine, in order to have some spare time in Rome before your bus to Sorrento departs, you'll need to be on one of the early trains out of Assisi. The first four trains depart Assisi at 6:15, 7:05, 7:22 or 7:50. Arrival times are 8:50, 8:58, 9:27 and 10:24 respectively. The first two runs do not require a train change. The last two do require a train change at Foligno. Here's a link to a sample train schedule. http://orario.trenitalia.com/b2c/nppPriceTravelSolutions.do?car=0&stazin=assisi&stazout=rome&datag=7&datam=12&dataa=2011&timsh=06&stazin_r=Staz_DA&stazout_r=Staz_A&timsm=39&timsm_r=39&lang=en&nreq=5&channel=tcom&npag=1&lang_r=en&nreq_r=5&channel_r=tcom&npag_r=1&x=28&y=12 Both the Marozzi and Curreri buses depart from the Tiburtina train station. As Frank notes above, all trains from Assisi will stop at the Tiburtina train station before stopping at the Termini train station. If my memory holds, the Curreri bus departs Tiburtina at 14:00 and the Marozzi bus departs Tiburtina at 15:00. Fare is about 18Euro.

Iti s a very nice bus with I think 1 stop. The AVE (fast train) is pretty pricey, plus you then have to hop on the local commuter train to get to Sorrento. Slig htly longer time on the bus, 3 1/2 hours. Note that one of the bus companies only runs during the high season. You can google the companies to figure out which one. And unfortunately, as I recall they only run 1 or 2 times a day. Bobbie

I think you can manage a good price taking trains instead of the bus. Buses are a secondary form of transportation in Italy for long distances. There is an early departure Eurostar train from Assisi 7h05 arriving in Napoli 10h25 with a connection in Roma Termini. Sounds an extremely interesting option, as you avoid regional trains out of Assisi. It cost €48 on MINI fares.

My trip was in late September. I ended up taking the train from Assisi to Rome. At that time, however, trains were no longer going to Tiburtina. We took the train to Termini, then the Metro to Tiburtina. Unfortunately, the Currier bus was no longer running, either, so we took the 3:00 Marozzi bus to Sorrento. It was a long day of travel, but well worth it, of course. I don't know if trains are again running to Tiburtina. If you are planning this route, be sure to carefully check out the Trenitalia schedules and routes. Have a great trip (I did!!)
