We need to get from Assisi to Sienna next Friday. I was hoping for a morning bus taking about 2 hours. What I've found on line is a 4 oclock bus arriving at 6pm. Anyone aware of an earlier arrival option? Siena is our only short stay and would prefer a full afternoon/evening and next morning there before heading to Florence. Thanks.
I don't really do buses, but if you can get down to Santa Maria degli Angeli which is down the hill from Assisi and where the station for Assisi is, early in the morning - there is a bus/train combo which can get you to the station below Siena before 10 am. The Assisi/Siena connection is really tough. It's about 3.5-4.0hr hours by bus/train. Connections in Terontola and Chiusi. No way around it except for a rental car. Right now, the bus only runs once a day in each direction. Simply take the local bus down the hill to the train station. Nigel has provided a great schedule. BTW, the town where the Assisi train station is located is Santa Maria degli Angeli.
Now I can answer my own question. There is a direct bus (IBUS)from Santa Maria degli Angeli which stops on the left side of the basilica entrance at 10:20 am(ours was 20 min late)with a stop in Perugia. Arrives at train/bus station in Siena at 12:00. Tickets can be purchased at travel agency Stoppini in Assisi or from the driver. Cost is 18 euro. Reserving by phone proved comically arduous.
In mid NOvember I am making Assisi my base. Can you travel to and from Sienna in the same day? WHen does a bus leave Sienna to arrive in Assisi? Is it best to stay overnight in Sienna. Any recommendations for a safe place for a solo, senior traveler?
Yes a return bus is on the schedule leaving around 5:30pm. (17:30) My impression is that Siena is safe, from my Amercan urban eyes.
