Hello!
My son and I will be visiting Italy in May, 2026. We will be in Assisi for 4 days as part of our trip. We will not have a car, but would like to visit a couple of sites that are not accessible by public transportation. Has anyone had experience with taxis in Assisi? Are they reliable and reasonably priced?

Taxicabs are not cheap in Italy, and Assisi is no exception. This article in 2023 indicates that Assisi had among the highest fares in Italy. A 5km (3 miles) ride would average almost 15€. So if you can take buses instead it will help you save money, especially for longer distances, like if you want to go to Gubbio or some other distant town. A ride to the Perugia airport, about 15-16km (10 miles) will set you back 35€ (flat rate).

Thank you! I am wanting to visit the Hermitage which is about an hour walk (at least that is what I think I see listed), so was trying to find a way to get there to save time and our legs. Maybe there is a bus? I will keep searching.

If by hermitage you mean the Eremo delle Carceri at the top of Monte Subasio, that's an uphill walk that is about 5 km long. By car it's about 10-15 min, but it's easily a 80-90 min walk going up. The road is very narrow so I doubt they have regular buses going up.
If you go down to the big parking lot on Piazza Giovanni Paolo II (pope John Paul II), there is a taxi rank that I remember is always full of taxicabs lined up. A taxi should be able to take you up there for under 20€. Coming back you might need to call a taxi, because I don't think they have taxicabs waiting up there. So get the taxi co. number and a phone. You can of course ask the cab to wait for you, but the meter will keep running during the wait. Or maybe you can make arrangement with the taxi driver to come back and pick you up a couple of hours later.
