We took the bus to the top of Assisi and worked our way down. I'm pretty sure that's how he suggests it. I can't remember how long it took us since we weren't in any rush.

It's completely up to you. It all depends on how much time you take at each place. Doesn't the book give an approximate length?

No the book gives no duration... I figured it was kind of an up too you thing just wondering if anyone had followed it and how long it took them...

Not sure if the self-guided tour has you going up to the top or in reverse. I can tell you that it's fairly steep going up from the Basilica which is at the bottom. At the train station, there is a bus stop in front of the small store next to the station. In the shop, buy a ticket on the Line C bus. It goes to the top of Assisi. You can then take your tour as you casually walk down. We did this and it was very easy. We saved the Basilica for the last. Spent lots of time in there. For us, it was the best gelato we found in Italy. Can't remember where so you will have to try a few places. Great little shops as well.

We did the R.S. self-guided tour during low season, when there were no crowds, no waits. I think about 3.5 hours, but we didn't linger anywhere very much. the Basilica was deserted when we went.

A very close daytrip would be to the town of Spello (there's actually a footpath from the Rocca Maggiore, if you are so inclined).
