Assisi Places to stay

I am trying to find a hotel in Assisi in May. Prefer a B&B or family owned type. Any recommendations?

First - our group (Assisi Performing Arts) is in Assisi for nearly 3 weeks every July so pardon me if I am prejudiced. Since the very beginning (16+ years), the singers and instrumentalists have stayed at Hotel Sole which is right between Santa Chiara and the Piazza Commune. You couldn't ask to be in a better area! The hotel (2 stars) is full of old world charm with a staff of the most delightful people. The food is, for my taste, the best in Assisi: Umbrian recipes from the family kitchen. The rooms are very comfortable, most are air conditioned but you probably won't need it. I was just commenting to another of our directors that the Hotel Sole has come to define "Assisi" for me in that it is the first thing I think of with great fondness when I think of Italy. I count the days until I return there on the day I leave there. What other hotel greets you with: welcome home, Robert! Sigh.

Wow, what a amazing review! Sounds wonderful. I will definitely check it out.
Since you've be traveling there for so many years you sound like a great resource. I will be traveling around Umbria and will have a car. Are there any particular town, areas, sites that I should not miss? I am willing to drive a maximum of 2 hrs. from Assisi.

I can't vouch for Hotel Sole but I can vouch for the location. I stayed in Assisi for two weeks last May and that's a wonderful location.

Before you start planning day trips from Assisi, how long do you plan to be there? And what time of year?

In summer 2014 I stayed at Camere Annalisa Martini (a Rick suggestion). A group of rooms adjacent to the family's home. It is located on a small street very close to Piazza del Comune. I loved the location. Her rooms are very clean and tidy. It's not a B&B but it is family owned. The location couldn't have been better.

I was very happy with Hotel Ideale when I stayed there this past July. It's run by a friendly, helpful family (not all of them speak English), the room was very nice and comfortable with a balcony and a great view. It has parking, and it's fairly easy to get on main roads. It's also across the road from the bus station if you're arriving that way. I will definitely stay there again and recommend it.

Hotel La Pilotta may be what you want, extremely helpful staff, small hotel, family-run, discount at their restaurant down the street. Easy walk to all the in-town sights.

Another vote for Hotel Pallotta. Good location about midway between the Piazza Matteotti parking facility and the main town square. We enjoyed the upstairs common sitting room, with large windows on all four sides. Photos here.

I have to say I can't recommend La Pallotta. (We stayed there two nights in May 2015.) The people were very friendly, but the only windows in our (small) room opened up onto the main street in front and it was NOISY. There was no air conditioning and it was warm so it was either suffocate in the room with the windows closed, or open them and be kept awake by clueless people walking by, talking very loudly. Assisi is made completely out of stone, so the acoustics in these narrow streets are such that sound blasts right into your room.

However the restaurant that's run by the same family (Trattoria Pallotta) is wonderful. It's not in the same building, but rather is off the main piazza which is nearby.

Thanks for the photos, Jeff - I always appreciate seeing places through the eyes of others.

Jeff, great photos. Thanks for sharing.
To Michael (and anyone else with suggestions) to answer your question - I will be in Assisi in May for 5 days. Will have a car and plan day trips around Umbria. What towns/areas should I not miss. I don't plan on driving more than 1 1/2 - 2 hrs from Assisi to another town.

I'll agree with Keith's assessment of the Hotel Giotto. We stayed there many many years ago and really enjoyed our stay. We had a room with a balcony and it was wonderful waking up in the morning and looking out over the town and the countryside. It was so convenient for seeing the old city and it's very close to many sights including the Basilica of St Francis. Glad to hear they are still going strong. They do have free parking if you're driving so that's convenient also.

bc,

I would also highly recommend Hotel Ideale. It's in a great location (right across from the Bus stop), the staff are great, the rooms very comfortable and they serve a nice breakfast. It's not a short walk to the main part of town and the Basilica.
