I was thinking of planning an easy day trip from Rome to either Orvietto or Assisi. We we will spending 4 days in Rome and am thinking that a visit to a hilltown may be nice. Any comments or suggestions?
Absolutely! We spent 2 days in Orvieto on our way to Florence from Rome & adored it.
Couple of ideas: visit the cathedral, descend St. Patrick's Well, visit the underground Etruscan caves, wander around the streets, climb the Toro del Moro.
There are also a couple of museums right around the cathedral area and many small churches.
Although Assisi is lovely, Orvieto is a MUCH easier daytrip from Rome. (Note the correct spelling of Orvieto, in case you decide to google it.)
I think Assisi is a much tougher day trip from Rome. My memory was there was at least one transfer and each leg was over an hour longer.
Thank you. Or is much to do in Orvieto?
So sorry, meant to say ...is there much to do in Orvieto. I know that there is plenty of sights in Rome and was just wondering if it is worthwhile in visiting a hill town to break things up.
Go to Orvieto. You will not be disappointed, especially by the cathedral. Read a little online before you go...it is fabulous.
Orvieto is a good choice (based on my research). I'll be in that area the last of June. Ostia (old Roman port city - lots of ruins) is also a good option and can be reached on the Metro.
Orvieto is simply charming and will be a much needed respite from the craziness of Roma.
Thank you for all the feedback. I am definitely going to set aside one day to visit Orvieto.
Try and get to the church early... Last year when I was there I was the only one inside for about 45 minutes... It was one of the most amazing experiences of my trips to Italy.
I have been to both cities and loved them both. I have returned to Orvieto two or three times. The one thing about Assisi is it is very hilly. Both cities are very charming and you cannot go wrong with either choice.
Happy Travels!
Take a picnic with you. There is a marvelous park next to the Duomo with a view off over the entire valley... Beautiful!
Perfect spot for a quiet day away from Rome!
Loved Orvieto & yes, there is a lot to do there. We did the underground tour (etruscan caves) & it was very interesting. I would definitely recommend it. The fascade of the Duomo is beautiful when the sun hits it. I loved walking around Orvieto during the afternoon siesta when very few people were out on the back streets & I felt like I had the town to myself. Orvieto is a 90-minute train ride out of Rome & you will really enjoy getting out of the hustle and bustle of Rome for the day!
Wanda,
I was thinking of doing a day trip in April when I am in Rome. I did see a bus tour that takes you to both Orvieto and Assisi for the day. I think it is a 13 hour day but I am considering it. I found it on Intervalworld.com which is for timeshare owners.
I tried to go to Assisi on my last two trips to Rome and ended up not making it because it is a tougher trip to make without a car. You will enjoy Orvieto. It is a charming little town on the hilltop. Be sure to check out the views from the garden behind the funicular station.
I found some tours on Viator.com also. The prices seem fair and it covers both Assisi and Orvieto.
