In Assisi one or two nights in April? Any suggestions as to where to stay?
I would suggest the Hotel Berti. It's 4km from the train station and part way up the hill. It's rated #1 on www.tripadvisor.com for 67 hotels in Assisi. The hotel is just inside the Porta San Pietro wall entrance to the city. The bus from the train station and even from Rome stops just outside the entrance. It can be a bit noisy because there's a parking lot along with the bus stop and it gets a bit busy.
You can get a hotel farther up into the city itself but you will need to take the minibuses up and down the hill. The Hotel Umbra is one such hotel and is rated #2 on Trip Advisor.
The city is just beautiful. Great churches, shops and great gelato.
Try Hotel Subasio, we stayed there and it was beautiful, in the historical part of Assisi. They have a website showing the hotel, the rooms, the rates, etc. You can also click onto the map and see the exact location.

We stayed at the Assisi Garden Hotel. It was chosen by the tour company. Nothing fancy, but nice. We really enjoyed the terrace. The historic part of the city was a fairly short, but steep walk from the hotel.
We liked Hotel Umbra. Had a large room with three windows that overlooked a convent garden. It was very quiet with nice breakfast and there is a terrace that also overlooks the garden. The restaurant at HU is also very good. Be aware that you are allowed to drive in to a certain point to unload luggage and then you drive to the carpark just outside the wall.
The city streets can be a bit steep. To make matters worse, most tour books suggest going to the basilica and then walking up. The basilica is one of the lowest places on the hill.
To beat the system, take the Line C bus to the top and walk down the streets. Much more enjoyable.
