Any recommendations on hotels in Assisi? I want to stay close to the St. Francis Basilica or St. Clare Basilica region of the city. On venere.com I was looking at Hotel Sole but it shows that they have no rooms for when I am going in May of '08. In fact, many of the hotels I was wanting to reserve are not available. Could they truely be full already? How could I contact these hotels to find out?

Try tripadvisor.com You can email hotels via there websites. If you are attempting to book a room for May 08, there should be rooms awailable. All rooms are within walking distance of St Francis and St Clare's as Assisi is a small town. No parking within the city walls. Good Luck
It's possible that they are showing no availability because you want to reserve for next year, and they have not yet set their rates. Being an obssessive planner, I've run into that quite a bit over the years. You can check by running a date a month or two before the one you want. If everything comes up showing n.a., then it's probably as I said. In that case, call or e-mail the hotel directly. (Google for the contact info.) The other possibility is that they have been pre-empted by tour groups. In that case, the hotel will advise you, and you can seek out other possibilities.
We just got back from 2 weeks in Rome and Assisi. While in Assisi, we stayed at San Giuseppe Monastery. Nice accommodations with a great view and for a great rate (approx. 30 euros/night). It is located between St. Francis and St. Clare basilicas, although every place in Assisi is within walking distance. www.msgiuseppe.it
