Assisi Hotel recommendation 1 night, 2 days

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out the logistics of booking a hotel in Assisi when traveling by public transportation, not by car. Rick Steves recommendations taking the bus from the train station to the last bus stop near Piazza Matteotti to start the Assisi Walk. I'm trying to think what to do with our minimal luggage while we are doing our walk. And what is the best location to handle this? May I should book two nights, checking in the afternoon or evening of the first night and departing early after the second night. Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Barbara Williams

Istituto Beata Angelina - a convent accommodation right across the field from the Basilica. Get a room with the view of the Basilica. WOW. Best view I have ever had from an accommodation window, rivaled only by a view Imgad of the Matterhorn. Booked thru monasterystays.com. You might be able to book directly.

Take a cab from the station and avoid the hassle of a bus and luggage

Hotel Sole which is between Piazza Comune and Basilica Santa Chiara. Very friendly, family owned hotel for several generations. Comfortable, clean, breakfast, great view especially from the rooftop deck. The Assisi Performing Arts festival has stayed here for 26 years! assisihotelsole.com

I stayed two nights at Asisium Boutique Hotel in June and enjoyed it a lot. My room had a beautiful view!

I also just travel by train - very easy. When you reach the Assisi train station, there’s a small vendor shop out front where you can purchase the bus ticket to take you up the steep hill. Have the Trenitalia app on your phone to purchase your train tickets.

Enjoy!

Assisi deserves more than one night, it’s just charming.
Try and fit in at least two nights there…..then you can more or less cover the whole town in your one day.
It’s quite small, but prepare for hilly streets.
You can also buy train tickets at the kiosk that Jean mentioned .
There are ticket machines on the station platform, but no ticket office.
Buy your return bus ticket at the same time you buy the one going up to the town, in case you can’t find a place to buy them to come back down.

I stayed at this hotel in Assisi and was very pleased with the room and service - https://www.hotelideale.it/ . It's within easy walking distance from Piazza Mazzeoti where the bus arrives. It's outside the walls but not difficult at all to tour the city from there.

We are currently visiting Assisi and staying at Hotel Umbra. We would definitely recommend it. Just off pizza commune. Great location, friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast. A bit old school, but clean. We would stay here again.

Hi Barbara,

Two nights is exactly right. Assisi, a bit like Capri or Positano, is a completely different place once the day-trippers leave (much quieter and more easily navigated), and if you get to the Basilica of St Francis early in the morning you can have it almost to yourself. For the luggage, the easiest answer is to stay inside the old town walls. Every hotel there will happily hold your bags if you arrive before check-in, so you can drop everything and do the walk unencumbered.

I’d look for somewhere in the middle or upper part of town, around Piazza del Comune or Santa Chiara. Rick’s walk starts at the top (Piazza Matteotti) and works downhill to the Basilica, so a central hotel puts you on or near the route. Your day could look like this: Line C bus from the station, hop off at the stop nearest your hotel, drop your bags, then carry on up to Piazza Matteotti (by bus or a short, steep walk) and stroll down through town at your own pace.

One small tip: the streets are steep and cobbled, so minimal luggage is essential. Wheeling a small case from the bus stop to a central hotel is fine, but I’d avoid anywhere with a long uphill walk from the nearest stop.

Enjoy it. It’s one of my favourite places in Italy.

”… but I’d avoid anywhere with a long uphill walk from the nearest stop.”

LOL! I learned that lesson on my recent trip! I just got off at the first stop at the basilica to walk up to my hotel instead of checking the route ahead of time. Instead of a short walk down to my hotel, I hoofed it up, up, up the steep hill! Thankfully I do pack extremely light. When I arrived at my hotel, my room was on the top floor. They offered to carry my backpack up to my room, but by then, what’s another couple flights of stairs - ha! When I left after two days, I just walked over to the close bus stop. ….and no harm. It just prepared me for Spello! : )
