Considering a day trip from Rome to Assisi but have concerns about how hilly and unavoidable, difficult steps the trip would involve. Are there options for exploring the city that would be feasible with a knee issue?

My wife has a bum knee and didn’t find it too difficult. There is an escalator between two sections of the town

If you stay on the main road that goes from Saint Francis to Santa Chiara, then it's not too hilly. But if go off the main road then it gets pretty hilly.
