Assisi Day Trip tomorrow...teenage son recovering from a broken foot

Heading to Assissi tomorrow with a 13 year old and 15 year old. Looking for a recommended route to get a taste of the town and sites. 15 year old is recovering from a broken foot, can walk some distance in a boot but all day.Was thinking of going downhill vs uphill. Wondering where to park and where to eat? Any advice or ideas welcomed.

I would park by the train station and take a taxi to the top by the main church. Ask the taxi to return at an appointed time to return you to your car. A broken bone is a serious thing. There are stunning views and that part of town is about as level as your going to find in Assisi. J

Was thinking of going downhill vs uphill.

I think this is a good plan to start uphill and work your way downhill.

I can’t advice you as to the best place to park because I didn’t drive in Italy.
However, I know that you can take a bus “C” in front of the train station (buy your tickets at the small shop in the station) up to Piazza Matteotti (the last stop)

Some of you may consider walking up to the Rocca Maggiore, a medieval fortress built on the summit of a hill above Assisi where you can experience amazing views of the city. Or…
Just down from Piazza Matteotti, you can visit the cathedral of San Rufino (St. Rufinus), one of the oldest in Assisi. Its beautiful façade includes three rose windows. It’s interior is simple but the floor is unique because sections of it are covered with glass and one can see parts of the old church upon which the church was built on. There is a crypt museum within the church that your teens may be interested in (I did not visit it)
On your way down you’ll arrive to Piazza del Comune, the main piazza in Assisi, and where you’ll find shops and various places to eat. My favorite was Trattoria La Pallota. It’s a bit hidden under an archway across from the Temple of Minerva.

I also recommend getting a delicious gelato at ‘Gelateria Sensi’, on you way to visit the church of Santa Clare.

Keep walking down along Via San Francesco, the main street that leads to the Basilica of St. Francis. This street is lined with many souvenir shops.

After visiting the Basilica of St. Francis, you can walk down to Piazza Giovanni Paolo II to board the bus back to the train station, or a taxi.

I’d suggest checking google maps to try to figure out if the walking distance from Piazza Matteotti to the basilica would be okay for your son.

Enjoy your day in beautiful Assisi!
