Assisi day trip

We are leaving for Italy in two weeks. Part of the trip includes a day trip to Assisi. We will be driving. Have read the posts about walking tours and the routes to take. However, I think I recently read something about no drive zones in Assisi such as in Florence and Rome. Is that true or did I misread the information? I'm hoping I misread the information. If it is true, can you drive from your hotel into town and then where should one park to be safe from fines.

Cathy, there are zones in Assisi restricted to residents, and there is no traffic permitted in the town center on certain days (usually weekends). There is a big parking lot/garage in Piazza Matteotti at the end of town furthest from the Basilica of Saint Francis - this is a good choice because your walk through town will be downhill (there are other parking lots/garages at other spots on the edge of town). A bus will take you from near the Basilica back to the parking lot/garage. Last year my friends parked near the entrance to the Rocca Maggiore for free, then walked down a few flights of stairs into town. Piazza Matteotti is more convenient due to the bus service. There is also some parking available along the streets at the edges of town. Some of the hotels/b&bs/guesthouses have parking for guests, most do not, but you may be able to unload bags at your hotel (if you're staying overnight; you mention a day trip) before going to park the car. Or you can take a taxi to your hotel after you park the car, but the bus is a very good option (runs about 3 or 4 times an hour).

I don't think that Assisi has the dreaded ZTLs. But, parking inside the walls is limited to one hour during the day. Tourists can use the parking to drop off or pick up luggage at the interior hotels. Assisi is not that large. There are minibuses to take you up and down the interior streets. We took the train and then the bus to the top of the town and then toured walking down the steep hills. There are parking lots midway up the hill and at the top of the town. There is no real reason to have a car there. Here's a link to more information on parking in Assisi. http://www.assisionline.com/parcheasus.html
