I want to take a day trip to Assisi while staying in Florence. Anyone have tips or recommendations on how to spend that day?
Thanks!
Connie - Go to the "Best Destinations" tab at the top of this page and then click through to Italy and then to Tuscany and Umbria. Rick has posted two articles on Assisi including a walking tour.
Connie, I've driven from Siena to Assisi. It's further than you think. But it's doable, that's for sure. Coming from Florence there are more Autostrada options than from Siena, which saves an INSANE amount of time in Tuscany (like three times!).
Assisi isn't very large. The cathedral and the tower at the top of the hill are about all there is to see. I doubled the day up with a few other Tuscan hill towns and it worked out perfectly. Just remember to multiply your driving time by about 3 if you're not on the Autostrada or other freeway-type highway.
If you are interested in visiting Assisi, check out Anne Robichaud's website, annesitaly.com. We have taken two tours with her and she is incredible. I highly recommend you take her tour of Assisi.
There is bus service to Assisi that takes two hours.
