Assisi area places to see

We are returning to Italy and will be using Assisi as our homebase. I am looking for advice on which hill towns are best in that region and maybe a fun vineyard? Also is Perugia worth a day? We are thinking Orvieto,Spello,Spoleto,Gubbio,San Marino,Ancona...suggestions? We have been to Florence,Rome,Siena,Pisa,San Gigmignano,Montipulciano on previous visits. We have 2 weeks.
Grazie

All the towns you mention sound really nice, including Perugia. The book "Cento Citta" may give you more ideas -- it was written more than 20 years ago but is still a great read. If you sign up for access to any of the British online newspapers (The Times, Daily Mirror, etc.) they often run specialized travel articles on topics like "best kept secrets of so-and-so region" and you can search their archives.

ignore the driving times, they are from just north of perugia so won't apply to assisi. but, anyway here's a list of towns of interest in the area. some more interesting than others.

between ancona and perugia i'd go for perugia for sure.

Umbertide - 15 minutes
Perugia - 25 minutes
Citta di Castello - 29 minutes
Deruta - 25 minutes
Montone - 25 minutes
Assisi - 24 minutes
Spello - 30 minutes
Gubbio - 38 minutes
Todi - 42 minutes
Lake Trasimeno
Spoleto - 56 minutes
Orvieto - 75 minutes
Cortona - 58 minutes

To the list above add:
Anghiari
Bettona
Bevagna
Castiglion Del Lago
Corciano
Foligno
Montefalco
Trevi

Do a Google Image search, and see which you can fit in your plans

Both the lists above will give you plenty of options. Will you have a car?

Thank you everyone this will keep us busy:) We will have a car but will use the train too when possible. Does anyone know about how accessible Mt Subio is this time of year and what the road is like between Assisi and Spello?

Friends and I drove from Assisi to Spello, it's only a few kilometers away. The drive was quite easy. We visited Trevi the same day.
