Assisi

Has anyone taken a day trip to Assisi from Florence? I was planning on doing this (Oct.) Any comments or suggestions?

Yes, we had a friend recommend that we do this and for us, it was a most beautiful hill town. Just stunning. It's a 2.5hr. train journey each way. Once there, go next door to the little book shop and buy a round-trip bus ticket. Most tour books start you out at the Basilica and then you walk up and up the hills. It's not bad but it's up. What we recommend is to take the Line C bus from the front of the train station to the last stop at the top and STROLL DOWN. It's really great. We ended up at the Basilica. Just superb and scenic. The shops are quite nice.

Another note, being a traditional town, the nicer places to eat close between 4-7. We missed a nice dinner. However, we had our best gelato in Italy in Assisi. Look for the shop on the right coming down that has all of the great pastries in the window.

Diane, We took the train from Cortona (same line as Florence) - the "C" bus to the top and walked downhill. I would only add that Rick's suggested walk downhill was very good and helped our day immensely. George, Pittsburgh
