Taking the train from Florence to Rome in Italy - is it worth it, or even feasible to stop briefly - only 3.5 hours between trains - and dash up to the town and back? Will have our luggage in tow unless there are lockers at the station. Any insights?
Not enuf time to get up and down the hill unless, perhaps, baggage storage arranged ahead and cab ready and waiting.
I disagree, regarding not having enough time. It only takes about 15 to 20 minutes by bus from the train station to reach Assisi. If you "pack light, pack light, pack light", and only have 1 bag each (I highly recommend Rick Steves' Back Door Bag), you should have no problem. If you do pack light and the train station does have a left luggage all the better, but it won't be necessary. You may be able to leave your bags at the Basilica while you tour it. Check out sanfrancescoassisi.org, there is a contact section there where you could e-mail them.
The only drawback is that you will be sure to fall in love with Assisi and wish you could stay longer.
