I'm visiting Italy in April for 5 nights. Rather than move from place to place, I was thinking of spending 3 nights or 4 nights in Rome and then 1-2 in Assisi. Is it reasonable transportation & time wise to get from Assisi to Fiumicino airport for a 15:05 flight?
If you leave early enough and everything goes corrrectly, you probably could. But why not just reverse your trip order. On arrival in Rome go directly to Assisi then finish your trip in Rome.
We arrive in Rome on a Saturday at 14:25. Would it be feasible to get to Assisi that same day? Also, would any of the sites be open in Assisi on a Sunday (the following day)? We would like to see the the sites in Assisi and perhaps Frassassi Caves while in the area. Thanks.
I should mention I will be traveling with my 20-yr-old niece. She's the one who mentioned the Frassassi Caves. I was interested in Assisi. (Hopefully she would enjoy it also.)
Assisi is beautiful. We stayed there 2 nights and wished we had done 3. Do stay in the historic center, because it's really magical to wander around in the evening. Here are some photos of our trip to Assisi in May 2008, in case you're interested. Happy travels.
Joan, regarding your question about Sunday in Assisi, the churches will be closed most of Sunday for Masses; the specific hours closed could vary depending on the Mass schedule. Last time I was there on a Sunday, the basillica of St Francis was only open for a few hours in the afternoon, as I recall (and for a few minutes between Masses). You would certainly be welcomed to come for Mass, assuming appropriate attire, although sightseeing is obviously not possible during the liturgy. And I agree with the suggestion to reverse the order of the trip. Even if the schedule said I could make it from Assisi to a flight, it would make me nervous, given the possiblity of transit delays or missed connections. Enjoy your trip. Assisi is wonderful. I had a full week there on my last trip and still was sorry to have to leave.
I like the idea of reversing the trip and going from Rome Fiumicino to Assisi. We arrive at Fiumicino at 14:25, have to go through customs. Anyone had experience getting transport from Fiumicino to Assisi? Train or . . . ?
Train would probably be the easiest. There are a couple of options depending on when you get to the train station at FCO. Should take you 2.5 to 3 hours. www.trenitalia.com FCO is entered on the italian site as Roma Aeroporto
