We are in the planning stages for a trip June-July 2020. I need some input about one leg of our trip. We will have a car. From Siena should our next stop be Asolo or Ravenna? We will have 3 nights to spend there. Our stop after that will be Piran, Slovenia. At first we were going to do Venice, but, we've already been to Venice(loved it) and we will have a car. I don't want to deal with parking the car and taking public transportation to get to our accommodation. Asolo first caught my eye with people on this forum saying they really enjoyed it. Also, we could do Padua as a day trip. But then I'm seeing people posting that Ravenna is one of their favorite places in all of Italy and now I'm wondering if I should go there instead.
Thoughts?
If you are coming from Siena, the logical choice for me would be Ravenna. It's definitely worth it, even if you are slightly interested in history. The 1,500 year-old mosaics will leave you speechless, and some of the best food I had in Italy was at the central market of Ravenna.
Although I think 3 nights may be a bit much for Ravenna, 2 nights would be perfect and you could do a day trip to Forli or San Marino. Maybe you could spend that other night at Asolo, on your way to Slovenia?
Thank you Carlos. I will definitely consider that. I can always add a day to my schedule elsewhere. I appreciate your sharing your thoughts. Ravenna does sound amazing.
Lori, I stayed two nights in Ravenna last August. If this is your only chance to be in that area, I would definite go see it. The mosaics are stunning! I actually stopped when I saw the first one and just stood there gaping! ; ) Buy the combo ticket and see them all. Also, there's a great mosaic museum & underground museum which I toured the second day. Be sure to try their piadina sandwich, too.
We spent three nights in Ravenna just last month. I agree with the others--the mosaics are stunning! There is a mosaic museum, as well as a Roman villa that was just excavated in the mid-1990's, that are interesting sites. Take time to walk around Ravenna--we happened on some outdoor ruins that were, literally, in someone's back yard! We had our favorite aperitivo of our entire three weeks in Italy at Caffe Palumbo at Piazza San Francesco. If you go to Classe, there is a hotel/ristorante next to the Basiilca. We had a delicious lunch there after spending time viewing the mosaics. Be sure to pack small binoculars! (I'm afraid I can't speak to Asolo.)
Ravenna is wonderful, don't miss it.
Thanks everyone for your tips. Looks like all votes are for Ravenna!
