Have not taken it but do you really need a tour of Venice? Make your way to Piazza San Marco to see the Basilica, Bell tower, Doge's Palace and then just walk the narrow streets stopping in at stores cafes, restaurants. Tours just rush you from one place to another and if you see a place that you like and you want to spend a little more time there, it's impossible because they are on a time frame and they move you like cattle. I say skip the tour and just adventure out and have fun!!! Only my opinion!!

Good way to look at it-since I've never been to Venice, I had no idea it could be done on one's own. Grazie!

I haven't either but I agree with Mark. Venice would have to be one of the easiest and most compact places to visit. I did however do a 3 hour walking tour which I really enjoyed just to get my bearings and a history of Venice. Otherwise it's easy to do on your own. The palace has audio guides which I would recommend and if you go to ST Marks go at about 12.30 when they illuminate the gold ceiling. I really enjoyed just wandering the streets and riding the vaporetto up and down the Grand Canal especially at night.

Hopefully you will staying overnight in the city. Then you can avoid the hordes of day trippers at the main attractions who are only in Venice from 9:00 to 5:00. You can wander the backstreets or hit some of the islands in the lagoon while they are in town and then see the attractions after they have departed. There is a huge difference being in St Marks Square with 100 others as oppossed to being in the square with 5000 other people.

I was only in Venice for one day last time I visited and I found it very easy to get around. I have to agree with everyone else...the best way to experience the magic of that city is just to wander around and see what you see. Get one of the very user friendly maps that are everywhere so you have a grasp on where the bigger sights are but other than that, just enjoy the city by finding your own way. That's the best advice.
