Artisanal gelato in Rome

Where can we find true artisanal gelato -- the kind where you taste the flavor of the ingredients -- -- not the sugar-- first?

My favorite is Come il Latte, not too far from the U.S. Embassy. I Caruso is good, too.

I took a food tour of Rome awhile ago and the guide gave us some hints on finding a quality gelato place. The two that stuck with me:

  1. If it's one of those places with garishly colored ice cream piled high above the top rim of the container in the freezer case, keep looking.

  2. If the mint-flavored gelato is green, try to find a better place, even if you weren't planning to choose the mint gelato. It's a general indicator of quality. Mint oil is colorless, so high-quality mint gelato is white, not green

In Rome last month and our favorite was La Romana. It was amazing and the flavors! Wow. It's near Termini/Borghese.

My favorites are Fatamorgana and GROM. There are several around Rome. (GROM is sort of the Italian Ben & Jerry's of gelato.)

Another vote for Come il Latte. It has the added bonus (for me, at least!) to be very close to Pinsere, one of my favorite little pizza places. Hard to beat a lunch of good pizza and gelato.
