Linda, after reading your message, I googled " art classes in Florence Italy" and got a large number of links to various schools and classes in Florence, with various durations, seasons, subject matter in the broad field of art, etc. This would be a good starting point. Once you or your sister-in-law narrow your search, maybe some people on this list can share some experiences.

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but I found a one time class on making frescoes through Context Travel. It looked like a really great class, but unfortunately, we didn't have time to do it.

There are any number of American artists who hold workshops in Italy. I once happened upon a class of painters from the US who were staying in San Donato (outside Florence near san g.) and studying with an American painter.
