Arriving in Venice, can I get to my tour on time?

Hello Hive Mind,
My husband and I are flying from Zurich to Venice and will arrive at the Venice airport at 8:40am. We both are checking one bag and will need to go through customs. Allowing time to wait for transportation, get lost, etc... I am wondering if we will have time to get to the Secret Itineraies Tour at the Doge's Palace at 11:35am? We will not have access to data to look at maps, so if we get lost (which seems easy to do in Venice) we will be at the mercy of asking for help/wandering around. We are also hoping to drop our louggae at our hotel, Locanda La Corte in the Castello District, before making the tour. What do you think, will there be enough time to make it to the tour with time to spare? I do not want to worry about making the tour. Otherwise do you just recommend making it for the next day? We were hoping to do Rick Steves tour through the canals very slowly the next day and possibly go to one of the islands. Not sure if doing the tour the next day at 9:55am will get us off to too late of a start. What would you do? Peace of mind and a tour the next day, or will we have enough time to get to the 11:35pm tour? Thanks for the help.

Along with this, my husband and I just qualify for the Rolling Venice Card. Online there is an option to purchase a ticket which includes transportation from the airport. Is it just easier to find our own transportation once we land? What is the fastest and easiest option?

I would not schedule a timed tour for 3 hours after landing. Even short hop flight s can be delayed.

I think doing the RS canal tour at your leisure after checking into your hotel and doing the Doges Palace tour the next day is the better choice.

Laconda La Corte is in the interior of the island. If you want to do this, you'll have to spring for a water taxi to the tune of about 120 EUR. But it could get you right to your hotel in about a half hour, since you are on a canal. I've been on the 8:40 Swiss flight from Zurich and you should have your luggage 1/2 hour after you land, and customs is just walking out the "Nothing to Declare" door.

I do have to chuckle about this statement:

We will not have access to data to look at maps, so if we get lost (which seems easy to do in Venice) we will be at the mercy of asking for help/wandering around.

What did people do before "data"? They use printed maps and your hotel will have them, and they can likely draw a line on it to show you the route from the hotel to the Doge's Palace.
Nonetheless, the best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray. So keep in mind something can arise to screw up your plan, so don't be too disappointed if it does not work out.

If you enjoy stress, keep your plan. Otherwise, chill. Do it the next day. You'll enjoy just wandering around Venice that first day, visiting ciccheti bars, enjoying some prosecco. It's a vacation, remember?

My last trip to Venice, I think it was 45 minutes, maybe almost an hour, from touchdown to exit the airport. Then,
Wait for bus to P Roma
Twenty minute bus ride to P Roma
Wait for vaporetto, get tickets etc. say 15 minutes
Vap down Grand Canal to Castello, depending on the vap stop, say 50 minutes
Walk to hotel, check in etc, walk back to the Piazza.

Nope, three hours will be a real scramble.

In August, I stayed at Hotel Ai Cavalieri which is very close to your hotel. I arrived from Paris at 9:35 (so no need to go through passport control) with one checked bag and took a water taxi that was prearranged by my hotel so it included a drive to the dock for the taxi, which was totally unnecessary. We arrived at the hotel a little after 11:00. I think an arranged water taxi is the fastest option but it cost us 185€ (which I think is a ridiculous amount of money but we paid it without complaint for a number of reason not worth going into here). We got out of the airport pretty quickly but the trip slowed down progressively the closer we got to the hotel. Based on my experience, I think it will be hectic/rushed because you need to drop off your luggage but doable. It took me about 10 minutes to walk to the Doge's Palace from Ai Cavalieri but I used GPS and data on my phone. The first time that I walked there from the hotel I got completely lost even with data but it still only took less than 20 minutes and it was not even my first time in Venice. It's a very easy place to get lost but that is part of its charm.

Switzerland is in the Schengen area so no Passport / Immigration check.

If you weren't dropping off the luggage it would be trivial in 3 hours. Finding your hotel, visiting with them, then getting to St Marco within the time - especially if this is your first visit to Venice and you are directionally challenged - may be a bit tougher. Do it tomorrow.

Enjoy the unparalleled beauty that is Venice, and really enjoy your vacation.

If you have already booked and paid for the tour, you can make it if you skip going to your hotel first. Going through " customs" will take no time. Take the bus from the airport to Piazzale aroma, cross over the big bridge to the train station where you will find a " left luggage" facility by Track One. Leave your bags there and go buy tickets for the vaporetto to San Marco. Assuming your plane is on time, you have time to do this.

But if you haven't booked tickets, it would be better to go the following day.

Lola beat me to it. If you must do the tour when you arrive, leave your bags at the train station and backtrack to get them. I would do the RS tour the first day, after you check in, and take the SI tour the next day.

The question is, are you based in Zurich for awhile or is this a connection from an overseas flight? Either way, I would never plan a timed tour within hours of my arrival anywhere by plane. Never.

Personally, I don't think the Secret Itinerary Tour is worth one iota of stress. It's interesting, but having endured it three times, I think the tour is very overrated, overhyped on travel boards. I would not jump through any stress hoops to see it, especially leaving my bags at the train station and then returning to retrieve them. Absolutely not.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. We will just wait until the next day for the tour. Appreciate the help!

Why don't you go to the islands the first day, take the tour the next day, and follow the RS walking tour in the afternoon?

We also stayed at Locanda la Corte two years ago and enjoyed it. They had just opened their restaurant. We took the Alilaguna boat from the airport on the recommendation of the hotel, getting off at Fondamente Nove. http://www.alilaguna.it/en/lines/linea-blu.
It's the second stop. You can book the tickets ahead of time from home, or purchase them at the airport as you leave. They are about 15 euro each.
On leaving the airport, you have to walk about 15 minutes to get to the Alilaguna pier, then wait for the boat to load, then it's about a 15 minute walk to the hotel, so it's about hour to an hour and a half altogether after you leave the airport to arrive at the hotel . The hotel directions are pretty clear for walking from the stop.
On leaving the hotel, walking to San Marco from there without data form Google Maps cold be a bit dicey if it's your first time Venice, so I also would not recommend trying to make a specific time so close to arrival.

If you download "Maps2go" on your phone, you will not need any data to access maps providing you download the maps either at home or when you have WiFi. Maps2Go allows you to download one free map. If you want more maps, you have to pay for the "premium" account. Maps2 go access all the wifi signals whether they are locked or not. You can keep your cellular data off, just turn wifi. It puts a dot where you are on the map and the dot moves when you move.

It's never a good idea to totally rely on WiFi to guide you through Venice's streets. The signal does not reach many calli. An expert paper map is the only thing to rely on, but those are increasingly more difficult to find.
