Arriving in Rome the day before Easter?

Hi, We are thinking about doing the tour that begins 9 day Heart of Italy Tour April 1st which is Easter Sunday.
That would have us arriving the day before and fending for ourselves over a busy holiday weekend. I once spent Orthodox easter in Santorini and EVERYTHING was closed. This could be a wonderful fun rich time to be in Rome or it could be pretty hairy. If anyone has advice, I am still on the fence about this date range! Thanks!

Saturday, your arrival day, will be business-as-usual. Restaurants will be open for dinner, for example. Since it is busy, and a Saturday at that, a reservation is advised. Sunday will be church-oriented, yes, and St. Peter's will be crazy so don't go there. After breakfast in your hotel, a nice walk would be good. Romans' will be doing that after their big Easter lunches. Again, make a res for lunch. That is a huge day for dining out. The Ghetto is teeming with activity on any Sunday and a good choice for Easter lunch.

Yes, museums, etc., will be closed but it is nice just to walk around and take in the atmosphere.

In 2005, we arrived in Rome on Easter Sunday, and I really wish we had picked a different time. Our hotel was in the Trastevere and all of the restaurants the hotel recommended were closed. Easter Monday was almost as bad, at least as far as restaurants. We spent the day at the Forum and Colosseum.

If I had it to do over again, I would avoid Easter weekend in Italy.
