arriving in Rome change planes tp Palermo

We will be arriving in Rome from Atlanta, then changing planes to travel to Palermo. My question is, can we check our luggage all the way to Palermo, or must we claim it in Rome to go through customs, then check the bags onto the next airline as it is now a domestic flight in Italy? Same thing coming back. It is domestic flight to Rome from Palermo, then international to US. Can we check luggage at Palermo all the way to Atlanta? The flights were booked at same time, not on individual airlines.

If you have one ticket with Alitalia/Delta (code share partners) from ATL to PMO, yes. In that case in ATL they will check all your bags all the way to PMO and you wont see them until you reach PMO. But if you fly to Palermo with a separate ticket with any other airlines, no.

Thank you so much for that reply. Makes it easier to know what to expect.

The bigger issue that you might have is immigration. I believe, you will go through immigrations in Rome. That can be a zoo. So if running a tight schedule do not be afraid to ask one of the uniformed personal to put you at the front of the line.

Don't worry about immigration either. It's just passport control, and it's usually pretty fast. In any case Alitalia has flights to Palermo every hour, therefore even if you miss one, Alitalia will rebook you on the next. Just relax and have some Marsala.

It is not good to have OCD especially in Italy. Don't want you to be mislead either way but our experience with Rome immigrations (passport control) in the past has been anything but speedy. Just this past May, arrived late morning on a direct flight from New York, immigrations took over an hour and half. Just two officers processing hundreds of waiting people. So plan accordingly. If you have extra time, have a coffee and relax waiting for your next plane.
