We will be arriving in Rome at the Termini Station around lunchtime with baggage headed for near Piazza Navona. Would it be better to get a taxi at the station or we could organize a driver through our accommodation. What about hiring a cab for an hour to take a quick tour of Rome while we are at it? Are there any companies that do just that? Thank you
A taxi to the Piazza Navona SHOULD cost about 10-12 euro with luggage. That's if you make sure you get a taxi from the taxi stand don't let someone lead you to a car and make sure the taxi has a meter!!!
I think a hired car from the station to your hotel could be pricey but it all depends on the rate quoted.
Rome is great city to explore on foot. If you are interested in hiring a driver try RomeCabs, www.romecabs.com.
Carol, on top of a hired car probably being a very expensive way to tour, I don't think "car" and "quick" are terms that go together during business hours in Rome! Traffic is slow and heavy and streets are narrow in the historic central part of the city. We did it all on foot and loved it - you'll see so much more! I know there's hop on, hop off tour bus option too but am not a good resource for that as we didn't do it. Rome Trippers, can any of you recommend this?
Carol, I currently live in Rome and if you have baggage (especially lots of baggage) take a cab.
But as suggested, when you exit the FRONT of the Termini Station head for the official Taxi stand - on your left as you come out. YOu will probably be "approached" by many folks who will ask, "Do you need a taxi?" Don't stop - head for the official taxis all lined up!
Sometimes there will be an "extra" charge (2-4 Euros) if you have a large amount of luggage but SamSn is right-- about 10-15 Euros is the standard charge.
For a cross-town trip such as this I would not spend the money on a "driver." If you are looking to take a "quick" tour of Rome, ride something like the 110 Bus which you can get on and off at various locations. It has the headphones that describe what you're seeing. Green Line and even the Vatican offer competition in this form of sightseeing. They cost about 16 Euros for 24 hours.
Your hotel can offer you a driver if you prefer a private tour! Good Luck!
Thanks for the replies so far. It's difficult to guage the distance looking at the map but taking into account if we do grab a taxi, would it be just as quick (and easy) to walk the distance from the station to our accommodation which is close to Piazza Navona. Take into account we will have wheelie cases? If we worked out our route beforehand, I guess we could go backstreets??? Is this feasible? Thank you.
Using google maps it looks like it is 1.5-2 miles. Assuming you are not familiar with Rome, I would recommend the taxi. We found last summer that it was hard to find our way around at first (streets are not straight and not well marked). By the time we left we felt much more comfortable. We had taken a taxi to our hotel, but walked and took the metro (yes with luggage!) to the train station when we left.
No, don't walk to Piazza Navona with your luggage. Roman is great city to explore on foot but not when you are weighed down with bags. Take a taxi to your hotel & then let the fun begin.
Packing light might make the baggage easier to handle from what I've read here.
