arriving in Rom

My husband and I will be arriving in Rome in June, 2014 for our 25th wedding anniversary. I have a hard time with jet lag. I would like to find a pension in Rome to relax and then to do some local travel for 3 days before we venture up to Florence, Switzerland and eventually Paris ...
Anyone have any suggestions of pensions to stay that will be near walking distances to the sights in Rome. Any "must see" ideas and must eat restaurants would be appreciated also.

I usually stay near the main train station in Rome - because it is walking distance to many sites and also the station is next to the Metro and the bus lines. There are dozen of hotels in that area. I would suggest looking at tripadvisor or venere.com to find something that will work for you. There are always lots of photos of the rooms and amenities.
You have plenty of time to plan a lovely trip.

Lynn, Check your local Library to see if you can find a copy of the RS Italy 2013 Guidebook. There are LOTS of hotels listed there in different parts of Rome and various price ranges. You'll probably find more hotels than pensions.

I prefer the area around Piazza Navona/Pantheon, especially if it's an anniversary celebration (congratulations!). There's a small hotel, Teatro Pace, which is on a little side street a block from Piazza Navona. No lift but a very nice place, breakfast is served in your room. There are dozens of restaurants along Via del Governo Vecchio, including Cul de Sac, one of my favorites. Restaurants in the piazza itself are overpriced and underwhelming, but it's a great spot for a (pricey) coffee and people-watching. If you are going to the Vatican Museums, there's a restaurant nearby called Isola della Pizza with much more than pizza.

Like Zoe, I prefer the Piazza Navona/Pantheon area to stay in. And if you're looking to lower the price, you can add in the Campo di Fiori area which is close by. I think this area sets you up very well to walk to different attractions. I prefer this area to Termini (the train station), though not all do.
