We are arriving around 7 pm at the airport in Bologna. We want to go to Lucca next but think we might want to spend one night in Bologna. Is it worth staying there and how is the transportation from the airport? Thanks!

Your instinct about spending the night in Bolgona is good. There aren't too many trains that time of night and you'd get to Lucca very late as it takes over 2 hrs train time not including getting to the train station, getting to your hotel, etc. And if driving it's 100 miles and 2+ hrs to Lucca (if you don't get lost) and you don't want to be getting off a long haul airplane flight and trying to navigate the rental car to a place you've never been in Lucca late at night when your exhausted and jet lagged. Take the Aerobus from the airport into the city center (15 mins, runs every 30 mins); and stay at Albergo Accademia or Albergo San Vitale, and there are other good choices, Rick doesn't list them but consult ViaMichelin.com.
