Arriving at Rome Airport at Midnight

Our flight get's in just before midnight; we were going to rent a hotel near the Termini train station, but it will be too late to check in, and we don't want to be wandering around there in the middle of the night, plus probably too late for the train. Our thought is to hang at the airport until morning, when the trains start running again. What in the world can we do at the airport from midnight until 6-7am?

Assuming you are arriving for the US and will be jet lagged, all those hours in the airport sound like a recipe for exhaustion that will run in your first day. Many hotels have 24 hour check in and you can get a taxi from FCO at any hour. Get into town and get a few hours of sleep,

I would look for a hotel that has a 24 hour check in.
Wandering the airport all night will leave you so miserable the whole day will be useless.

Many here have recommended the Hilton at the airport

why not just book a hotel with 24 checkin and go to sleep when you arrive. The last thing you want to do when you arrive is hang around the airport for hours. If you are looking to save paying for a hotel for the night, save the money elsewhere, you will be happy in the long run.

Some hotels will have 24 hour check in. Others will not, but will be able to accommodate a midnight check-in if you notify them in advance.

I'd find a hotel that fits one of these two scenarios, at least for your first night. Do consider staying at an airport area hotel; these all will do late check-in, as that's one of the main reasons for their existence. The Rome Airport Hilton (note exact name) is the easiest as you can walk there in about 10 minutes from the terminals, but because of this convenience it's also expensive. There are lots more hotels a short bus ride or cab ride away that will be cheaper (including the Hilton Garden Inn at the airport).

I second staying at the Hilton airport hotel. It’s an easy walk and they’ll allow late check in. Sign up w Hilton Honors, if you haven’t already, to get better rates. No point in staying at the airport that long. You’ll feel much better after some sleep and a shower.

I haven't stayed there, but check out Hello Sky airport hotel. It is literally in FCO, fairly new there, and supposedly cheaper than the Airport Hilton. You can walk right there without leaving the airport. Not sure if it meets your budget, but is a place I would seriously consider if I was in your situation. It looks like you can book the rooms by the hour, and check-in is certainly open 24/7.

What you are proposing to do is ridiculous.
I am sure you can find hotels with 24hr check in within your budget near Termini.
Most hotels and B&B allow that. If you can’t find one, I’ll suggest you a nice and cheap one below. I’ve used them a few times in the past.
